Printing each issue is to expensive at this point. We’re supporting our digital sales and focusing on building trade paperback comics once we have 4-5 issues completed. So while it will take longer to get something printed and in your hand (we’ll set up some print on demand for you though!) We’ll still be releasing our digital comics so you can follow Turbulence and Defects for just $2 for the latest issue and $1 for previous issues!

All of our books will also be on the Amazon Kindle with their ‘Panel Viewer’ option. You’ll be able to read the books as each panel takes over your viewer, no more pinching and zooming to read!

We’re excited to bring you the first look at ‘Defects: Issue 2′, and a status of where all of our comics,  and the business are at!

The story picks up immediately following issue 1. You’ll see Game Plan revealing his scheme to get Drizzle away from her captor, Johnny, but how much of the plan is he really telling his team?

Here we have a few images of the finished line art, that’s now being colored.

Aside from this amazing artwork, we wanted to give you an update on where our stories, and the team in general is at.

We would love to release a new comic book every month, but we are a completely self run independent company just now getting our name out there, and our stories out there, which means we are subject to money issues.

The idea behind ‘Making comics one paycheck at a time.’ is that we do them as quickly as we can, but as slow as we must, and sometimes financial issues and surprises can delay us from bringing you our stories. Could we skip a few steps and cut a few corners to get them to you faster? Sure, we could skip the colors, and go straight to getting the pages on line, why not right? A lot of comics are in black and white, but here’s the thing, these stories don’t lend themselves to being black and white. If we’re going to produce the very best stories we can, we need to tell them the right way. In order to grow this company we cannot produce anything that’s just okay, we have to push ourselves to bring the very best comics we can that stick with you, and keep you interested when a new one isn’t released for another 3 months.

There is plenty of good news however.

While we are just now showing you pages from issue two, we’re thrilled to announce the status of our comics in the long run.

Defects Issues 3 and 4, both have their line art completed. Why were these finished before issue 2? Sadly, two years ago we hired an artist for Issue 2 who choose not to uphold their part of the deal in doing the art, so after a long battle we’ve decided to move on. Thankfully we never stopped working, and can’t wait to get Issue 2 of Defects complete so we can quickly bring you 3 and 4!

As for Turbulence, Issues 1 and 2 have already been released, Issue 3 is being lettered and Issues 4 and 5 are finished. We had a similar issue with Turbulence that caused them to go out-of-order, but that’s the life of an independent company.

Now something bigger than the books, getting them to you. The team has discussed this for a while and we’ve come to the conclusion that, for now, selling them as cheap digital books is best..

All money for the art aside, it was costing us 2.50 cents per issue to print. We’ve tried to find better pricing (and if you have it please pass it along!) but when you sell a book to the comic shop you normally receive half the cover value (2 dollars for a 4 dollar issue) That means for every issue we sell to a shop we lose 50 cents on printing alone this doesn’t begin to factor in the art cost.

So to keep our company growing, we will be offering the comics as download-able .pdf’s , it kills us to not get you the printed copies, but that’s money we can use to bring you more stories, and our only other option we’ve found is to print in China. While the prices are amazing, we would need around 3,000 to print 6,000 issues. This is a great deal…if we have 3,000.

This year we plan to release 4 issues. Turbulence 3 and 4, and Defects 2 and 3. We will be at Austin Comic Con again, and hope to have a table at Staple (In Austin) as well! Possibly, even a Kickstarter.

We will also be launching a few reoccurring articles on the website that we’ve mentioned a few times before, from comic book reviews to behind the scenes on how we make our books.

Another announcement we have is that Chris Garrett has joined over a thousand people Top Cow’s 2012 Talent Search. By writing and submitting a script based on another companies work he hopes to create a comic book under Top Cow’s (Creator of The Darkness, and Witchblade) brand! We will be uploading his script this month.

 Stay tuned everybody, it’s going to be a wonderful year.

The post 2013: Our True Year One appeared first on Overtime Comics.

All because of a valentine’s day gift from my wife, Amanda Garrett, she came to me an envelope for V-day and inside of it were 3 notes, and I could pick my present. The first was that she would buy us tickets and fly us to San Diego for Comic Con, the second was helping pay for another issue of the comics production, and the 3rd was to pay for our very own table in our hometown of Austin.

While the desire to make more comics, and go to the worlds largest comic book convention was an overwhelming thing to toss aside, I couldn’t help but choose to bring what we’ve worked so hard on for years away from possible customers and fans any longer.

Now keep in mind, this is in February  and at this time our ‘Staff’  is Chris Garrett (whom is bringing you this post) and Amanda (who fixes all grammar issues, and keeps the story fluid) Along with freelance artist we hire.

The process of getting ready for Comic Con begins with the two of us looking at what to bring to the literal table, obviously the comics, maybe some magnets or buttons. While we’re discussing this I contact my good friend, Chris Fulgham, whom worked with me during my time at Blizzard Entertainment.

Chris has been involved with the company before it had a name, on and off as his schedule would allow but always took them very seriously when he was available, he just enjoys creating things. We hung out as often as possible but after leaving Blizzard our schedules become disconnected, when I mentioned Austin Comic Con he invited Amanda and I over. Little did we know that this would be the first official meeting of Overtime Comics.

We read Turbulence Issue 1 and 2, and I realized I hadn’t read the physical issue in almost 2 years, it’s amazing how that short of an amount of time can change your writing style and your sense of notice errors, and boy oh boy did Turbulence have some errors.

Aside from misplaced commas and a missing word or 6, I still had a deep love for Turbulence and was reluctant to change it until my wife and friend convinced me that we’re building a business, and businesses need to fix everything they can. With that we set into the insane work of redoing two completed comics.

Lettering it again was the easy part, but as you long time fans we’ll know we edited a large part from the books, particular the real big secret of the series. Confused about this statement  That means you’re one of our newer readers andyou’re in for a real treat coming up!

We began looking for new ways to market our comic and create some hype before the show, which is when we brought in the remaining members of our team!

That dastardly devil is Khoa, our media management guy. Khoa handles turning the comics into amazing stop motion videos that will soon be all over the website, here is a sample of one  now!

Now while our team and reach was growing, we still had one embarrassing spot, our website. That’s where the wonderful J.D. comes in. J.D. and I met through our day jobs and quickly began working on expanding the website from the image on the right to the great website you’re on today. He also set up all of our files for the digital comics I’m sure you’ve enjoyed! (No picture of JD, he’s the tech guy remember? He’s just a bunch of code.)

That just left the physical marketing, which was a no brainer on who to turn to. The very couple that introduced Amanda and I. Kim is a graphic designer and designers our wonderful banner, buttons, hand outs and just about anything else you saw, and Josh took on the brave task of suiting up in the Gravnos suit to bring people to our table!

 We’re thrilled to bring you these stories. We hope you’ve enjoyed them so far, and this look at our history as a company and a group of friends. Soon we’ll have a lot more books for you but in the mean time you’ll soon see our review of Austin Comic Con and more importantly we are announcing our official participation at New Orleans Comic Con on November 30th- December 3rd.

We can’t wait.

Catchy names pending, one area we really want to focus on is creating tutorials on comic book creation. Everything from learning the legal mumbo jumbo to showing you how to run a comic book website, hire your own artist to work with, writing a script and creating your first character. This series will be about answering the question you have about creating your own comics. We’re been doing this for several years and know we still have a lot to learn, but hopefully we can make your entry into the comic book creation world, a little easier.

Our second article  ’Turn the Page’  will show you the progress we’re making on our books as it’s happening, and explaining past choices while evaluating our future ones.

Another article we’re looking forward to is “That’s What She Read”. Essentially this series will follow our editor, Amanda Garrett, as she reads classic and new comics then reviews them. The unique view of this article is that, while her grammar and story structure are astonishing, Amanda hasn’t been exposed to print comics for very long. Sure she goes to the Midnight showings of every Superhero movie, and is surrounded by comics on a daily basis, but this time she’ll be the one picking out the books and reviewing source material Vs. the movies without already hating the movie the day it’s announced.
